When people hear “Lake of the Ozarks,” they usually picture hot summer days, boats packed into the coves, and live music rolling across the water. We love that version of the Lake, too—but if you only visit in July, you’re actually missing some of our favorite traditions.
Winter at the Lake has its own personality: twinkling light parks, Christmas villages, eagle watching, wild Mardi Gras weekends, and brave souls charging into icy water for the Polar Plunge. The crowds are lighter, the traffic is calmer, and you get that small-town, everybody-knows-everybody feeling…with plenty still going on.
Because we live here year-round and host guests all winter long, we wanted to put together a real, boots-on-the-ground winter events guide for both locals and visitors.
Why Winter at Lake of the Ozarks Is Worth the Trip
We’re a little biased, but here’s why we think winter at the Lake is underrated:
-
The water may be quiet, but the communities are busy with parades, concerts, light parks, and charity events.
-
You get easier dining and shopping—no fighting over parking or waiting an hour for a table.
-
Lodging tends to be more relaxed, and there’s time to enjoy slower mornings, late checkouts, and cozy nights in.
-
Some of the most iconic events—Eagle Days, the Polar Plunge, and the Mardi Gras Pub Crawl—happen in the off-season.
From our vantage point as local hosts, winter is when the Lake feels most like a community. Visitors who come this time of year usually end up saying, “I had no idea so much was going on.”
This guide is our way of helping you experience that side of the Lake—whether you live 10 minutes away or six hours down the interstate.
Holiday Light Parks & Christmas Traditions (November–Early January)
If you love Christmas lights, winter at Lake of the Ozarks is your playground. Several drive-through and walk-through displays light up the nights from late November through early January, and many are free or donation-based.
Enchanted Village of Lights – Laurie
-
When (2025–26):
-
December 1, 2025 – January 1, 2026
-
Nightly, 5:00–9:00 p.m. (open until 10:00 p.m. Friday, Saturday & holidays)
-
-
Where: Laurie Fairgrounds, Laurie, MO
This is one of the Lake’s signature light parks and a long-time local favorite. You drive slowly through the fairgrounds, weaving past animated displays, tunnels of lights, and scenes that get bigger and brighter every year.
Why we love it:
-
It’s kid-friendly and low-stress—you never have to leave your vehicle.
-
Donations support the community, so your evening out does a little good along the way.
-
It pairs perfectly with a quiet winter stay in Laurie, Sunrise Beach, or Camdenton—you can hit the lights after an early dinner, then head back to your rental for hot chocolate and a movie.
St. Patrick’s Festival of Lights – Shrine of St. Patrick, Laurie
-
When (2025–26):
-
December 1, 2025 – January 4, 2026
-
Nightly, 5:00–10:00 p.m.
-
-
Where: Shrine of St. Patrick, Laurie, MO
The St. Patrick’s Festival of Lights is a beautiful, faith-focused display at the National Shrine of Mary, Mother of the Church. Thousands of lights trace the grounds, nativity scenes, and shrine structures.
This one feels a bit quieter and more reflective, and it makes a lovely stop if you’re staying on the west side of the Lake or capping off a day of Christmas shopping and errands.
Versailles Unity Circle of Lights
-
When (2025–26):
-
December 1, 2025 – January 1, 2026
-
Nightly from dusk to midnight
-
-
Where: Versailles City Park, Versailles, MO
Versailles turns its city park into a ring of glowing displays, and you can either drive slowly through or park and walk parts of it, depending on the night and weather.
If you’re already out this way for other events—like Caroling in the Cave at Jacob’s Cave on December 6, 2025, from 5:00–8:00 p.m.—this is an easy add-on.
Lodge Holiday Village Experience – The Lodge of Four Seasons
-
When (2025):
-
Fridays & Saturdays, December 5–20, 2025, 4:00–9:00 p.m.
-
-
Where: The Lodge of Four Seasons, Lake Ozark
The Lodge transforms into a holiday village over several weekends, with festive decor, special activities, and plenty of opportunities for photos, treats, and cozy indoor time.
This is a fun one to pair with a stay in Four Seasons or Lake Ozark—especially if you have kids or grandkids who love that feeling of “stepping into a Christmas movie.”
Santa & Mrs. Claus at Osage Beach City Hall
-
When (2025):
-
December 2, 9, 16 from 5:00–7:00 p.m.
-
December 6 & 20 from 12:00–4:00 p.m.
-
-
Where: Osage Beach City Hall
Along with the holiday lights at City Hall and along Osage Beach Parkway, kids can meet Santa and Mrs. Claus on select days in December. The City notes that there are no lights at Osage Beach City Park this year, but the displays along the Parkway and near City Hall more than make up for it.
This is perfect if you’re:
-
A local family wanting pictures with Santa without driving to a mall, or
-
A guest staying in Osage Beach and looking for something simple and festive to do before dinner.
Old Kinderhook Christmas Village & Ice Skating
- When (2025):
- December 12–14, 2025
- December 19–21, 2025
-
-
-
Where: The Ice at Old Kinderhook, Camdenton
Old Kinderhook’s Christmas Village is one of those events people plan winter trips around. On select December weekends, the resort hosts:
-
Ice skating at The Ice
-
Visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus
-
Horse-drawn carriage rides
-
Carolers, hot chocolate, and more family-friendly activities
If you’re staying nearby in Camdenton, Sunrise Beach, or along the quieter Niangua arm, this is a must-see. We often have families book a long weekend just to skate, ride the carriages, and soak up the Christmas atmosphere.

January Highlight: 2026 Lake of the Ozarks Eagle Days
Eagle watching is one of those off-season experiences that surprises people. Once the leaves are off the trees and the air gets crisp, bald eagles show up in force around the Lake.
Eagle Days 2026
-
When: Saturday, January 10, 2026 | 9:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
-
Where: Multiple locations around Lake Ozark (see here for details)
Eagle Days combines:
-
Live eagle programs with birds from rehabilitation centers
-
Viewing stations along the water with spotting scopes and volunteers
-
Family activities and educational displays
It’s an ideal event if you:
-
Want a family-friendly learning day
-
Love photography (snow, bare trees, and big birds make for fantastic shots)
-
Are looking for a “something different” winter weekend that doesn’t revolve around nightlife
If you stay with us in Lake Ozark, Osage Beach, or Four Seasons, you’ll be close to the main activity hubs and have an easy drive back to your rental for hot coffee and a warm fireplace afterward.
February Highlight: Polar Plunge at Grand Glaize Beach
This is the event where the Lake community gets loud, goofy, and incredibly generous—all in the name of a good cause.
What is the Polar Plunge?
The Lake of the Ozarks Polar Plunge is a signature fundraiser for Special Olympics Missouri (SOMO). Participants raise money, put on costumes, and then run, walk, or crawl into the icy waters at Grand Glaize Beach (Public Beach #2) in Osage Beach.
Alongside the plunge itself, SOMO often pairs in:
-
A Polar Bear Strut 5K run/walk
-
Costume contests
-
Chili cook-offs or other warm-up activities
The specifics change year to year, so always check the official event pages for details.
Polar Plunge Lake of the Ozarks – 2026 Date
For Winter 2025–26, the 2026 Lake of the Ozarks Polar Plunge is scheduled for:
-
Saturday, February 28, 2026
-
2:00 p.m. at Grand Glaize Beach, Osage Beach, MO
As of now, this date and time are listed on the official Special Olympics Missouri event page for the 2026 Polar Plunge – LOZ. Always confirm via plungemo.org or the specific event registration link before you travel, just in case organizers adjust the schedule.
How to “Do” Polar Plunge Weekend
You don’t have to jump in the water (we won’t judge either way). Here are a few ways people enjoy Polar Plunge weekend:
-
Plungers:
-
Form a team with friends, coworkers, or family
-
Book a Lakefront home or condo so you can thaw out in a hot shower or hot tub afterward
-
Make a whole weekend of it—Friday arrival, Saturday plunge, Sunday brunch and checkout
-
-
Support crew:
-
Cheer from shore with cameras and hot drinks
-
Join the 5K instead if ice-cold water isn’t your thing
-
Spend the rest of the day exploring Osage Beach’s restaurants and shops
-
From our side, we see a lot of multi-family groups and local teams book a bigger house so everyone can gather, cook, and relive their plunge stories together. If you call us at 573-658-1941, we’re happy to help you find something close to Public Beach #2.
Mardi Gras Pub Crawl: The Lake’s Biggest Winter Party
If the Polar Plunge is the Lake’s wildest charity event, the Lake of the Ozarks Mardi Gras Pub Crawl is its wildest party weekend.
Dozens of venues participate, and buses shuttle crawlers from stop to stop so you can safely enjoy live music, drink specials, beads, and the full Mardi Gras atmosphere up and down Bagnell Dam Blvd and surrounding areas.
What We Know About the 2026 Pub Crawl
When: February 21, 2026
Check out the official Mardi Gras Pub Crawl website as more details are still in the works as of this publication!
As of the latest check, the official website is still focused on 2025 sponsors, bus maps, and t-shirts, but the 2026 date has been confirmed!
What to Expect If You Plan a Pub Crawl Lakecation
It’s not too early to think through how you want to wexperience Pub Crawl weekend!
-
Lodging strategy:
-
Stay in Lake Ozark or near the Bagnell Dam Strip if you want to be right in the middle of the action.
-
Stay in Osage Beach or Four Seasons if you want a quieter home base and will ride the buses in.
-
-
Group size:
-
Couples might like a condo or lakeview escape close to dining.
-
Larger friend groups often book one of our lakefront homes with multiple bedrooms and big common areas so everyone can get ready together and recap the night over breakfast.
-
-
How locals “do” the Pub Crawl:
-
One night out is usually plenty—we recommend planning a chill day after, with brunch at the Lake and an afternoon nap or hot tub soak back at your rental.
-
Many locals don’t ride every bus stop; they pick a cluster of favorite venues and go deep rather than wide.
-
Always double-check the official schedule and bus routes, then match your lodging location to how you want to crawl.
Building a Winter Lakecation Around These Events
You don’t have to hit everything (please don’t try; that’s how people burn out on their own vacation!). Instead, think of winter at the Lake as a menu of event “anchors” you can build a laid-back getaway around.

Practical Tips for Enjoying Winter Events at the Lake
We’ll wrap up with a few practical notes we’ve picked up from living here and hosting winter guests.
Always Double-Check Event Details
Even though we’ve leaned heavily on official sources, every one of them includes some version of this disclaimer: event dates and times are subject to change; always confirm with the host.
Before you drive in for a specific event, take a minute to:
-
Visit the event’s official website
-
Call the listed phone number if the weather looks questionable
-
Check local tourism or chamber pages for updates
What to Pack for Winter at the Lake
Winter weather here can swing from mild and sunny to windy and icy in a matter of days. A few things we always recommend:
-
Layers: base layer, fleece, and a windproof/water-resistant outer layer
-
Hat, gloves, scarf: especially for light parks, parades, and eagle watching
-
Waterproof boots or sturdy shoes: sidewalks can get slick
-
Camp chairs & blankets: for parades or watching the Polar Plunge
-
Binoculars: for Eagle Days and general wildlife spotting
If you’re staying in one of our homes, you can count on cozy blankets, good heating, and plenty of hot beverage options—but it never hurts to bring your favorite mug.
Booking Winter Lodging
Because winter is technically the “off season,” people sometimes assume they can wait until the last minute to book. That can be true for random weekends, but for big event weekends, we see lodging tighten up, especially:
-
Christmas Village & light-park peak weekends
-
New Year’s Eve
-
Eagle Days
-
Polar Plunge
-
Mardi Gras Pub Crawl (once dates go live)
If you know you want a particular home, view, or neighborhood, it’s smart to reserve as soon as your dates are set.
Plan Your Winter Lakecation With Us
We started Lakecation Vacations because we genuinely love this area in every season—not just summer. Our team lives here, shops here, raises kids here, and yes, we absolutely bake cookies and drink cocoa while driving through light parks in December.
When you stay with us, you’re not just getting a place to sleep; you’re getting a local partner who can help you:
-
Match your trip (family lights weekend, Polar Plunge team, adult Pub Crawl getaway) to the right part of the Lake
-
Find a home with the amenities you actually need in winter—fireplace, hot tub, good Wi-Fi for remote work, plenty of parking
-
Navigate which winter events are closest to your rental so you spend more time enjoying and less time driving
You can:
-
Browse our Lake of the Ozarks vacation rentals on our website: www.lakecationvacations.com
-
Or just call/text us at 573-658-1941 and tell us what weekend and event you’re thinking about—we’re happy to play matchmaker between your plans and our properties.
Whether you’re plunging into the icy lake, wandering through a glowing light village, or listening to eagles call over still winter water, we’d love to host your off-season Lakecation and show you how magical the Lake of the Ozarks can be when the docks are quiet and the lights are bright.
