If you only know Lake of the Ozarks from Fourth of July weekends and boat wakes… winter will surprise you in the best way.
The lake quiets down. Traffic eases. You can actually get a table without a 90-minute wait. And underneath all that calm, Osage Beach, Lake Ozark, and Camdenton are still very much awake—just operating at a slower, cozier pace.
We’re Lakecation Vacations, and we live here year-round. In summer we’re helping guests dock boats and find the best waterfront patios. In winter? We’re still out and about—grabbing breakfast on the Strip, sneaking in cave tours on cold days, letting the kids run wild at indoor fun centers, and saying “yes” to one more pizza night in Camdenton.
This is the guide we’d give our own friends:
A local’s off-season guide to Osage Beach, Lake Ozark & Camdenton—what’s actually open, where we actually go, and how to build a laid-back winter getaway around it.
No made-up events, no guessing about seasonal closures. If we mention a business as a winter option, it’s because we’ve double-checked that they operate in the off season. (Hours can still change, so always peek at their site or social before you drive over.)
What “Off-Season” Really Means at Lake of the Ozarks
Let’s get this out of the way: “off-season” does not mean “nothing to do.”
Around the Lake in winter, you still have:
-
Year-round attractions like Bridal Cave in Camdenton, which proudly bills itself as open year-round with guided cave tours.
-
State parks like Ha Ha Tonka and Lake of the Ozarks State Park, open all year for hiking, overlooks, and exploring—just dress for the weather.
-
Indoor family fun, from Miner Mike’s & Buster’s Adventure Town in Osage Beach to escape rooms and movie theaters in Lake Ozark.
-
Restaurants, diners, and wineries that run all year, sometimes with special fall/winter menus.
What does change?
-
Some iconic summer spots—like big waterfront pool bars such as Dog Days Bar & Grill—do close for the cold months. Their own site clearly states they’re “closed for the season” as winter sets in.
-
Hours get cozier. Places that are open late in July might wrap up earlier on a Tuesday in January.
-
The vibe shifts from “let’s do everything” to “let’s enjoy a couple of really good things and then go back to our comfy lake place.”
So with that in mind, let’s break this down by town.
Osage Beach: Off-Season Hub for Food, Fun & Rainy-Day Plans
Osage Beach is still the “busy side” of the Lake in winter, just…less busy. It’s where locals from all over the region come for errands and treats when the water is cold and the kids are restless.
Where We Eat in Osage Beach (All Winter Long)
Wobbly Boots Roadhouse – BBQ, Sports, and “Let’s Just Meet There”
4717 Osage Beach Pkwy, Osage Beach, MO 65065
If you ask a local, “What’s actually open in January?” Wobbly Boots is going to come up fast.
-
Smokehouse-style BBQ, burgers, sandwiches, wings
-
Full bar and lots of TVs—great for game days
-
Open 7 days a week, with current listings showing daily lunch-to-evening hours even in the cooler season.
It’s one of those places where you can show up slightly bundled, a little wind-burned from a state park hike, and feel completely at home.
Local way to use it in winter:
-
After a long hike at Lake of the Ozarks State Park, grab a late lunch or early dinner here.
-
Or use it as your “meet halfway” spot when you’ve got friends staying in Lake Ozark or Camdenton.
On The Rise Bakery & Bistro – Brunch, Coffee, and “Let’s Linger” Mornings
5439 Osage Beach Pkwy, Osage Beach, MO 65065
If we’re talking off-season pleasures, a slow brunch is near the top of the list. On The Rise keeps the lights on all year, even rolling out a special fall/winter menu when the temps drop.
Expect:
-
From-scratch pastries, breads, and sweets
-
Full breakfast, brunch, and lunch menu
-
House-roasted coffee and brunch cocktails
It’s the kind of place where you order “just coffee and a pastry,” then somehow end up with a full Benedict and something to take home.
Local tip:
If you’re staying in one of our Osage Beach Lakecation rentals, designate one morning as “we’re not cooking” day and let On The Rise take over. Then bring a box of extra treats back to the house for late-night snacking.
Other Year-Round Osage Beach Staples
You’ll also find:
-
Miner Mike’s & Buster’s Adventure Town – 50,000+ sq. ft. of indoor rides, games, and go-karts; a go-to for families in any kind of weather, promoted as “rain or shine, it’s always a good time.”
-
Big box & grocery stores along Osage Beach Parkway—your winter stock-up corridor before hunkering down in your rental.
-
Osage Beach Outlet Marketplace – in redevelopment mode but still operating with a lineup of outlet and retail stores and posted year-round hours; a handy option if you like browsing or need a quick wardrobe refresh.
What We Do in Osage Beach When It’s Cold or Wet
When the weather isn’t ideal for a blufftop hike, Osage Beach becomes our default “what now?” answer.
Some winter-friendly picks:
Miner Mike’s & Buster’s Adventure Town
4515 Osage Beach Pkwy, Osage Beach, MO 65065
-
Indoor rides, games, simulators, and arcade fun under one very large roof.
-
Their own materials and regional tourism sites promote it as an all-weather indoor fun center, making it a safe bet in winter—though hours can vary by season, so always check ahead.
This is where we send families who say, “The kids have energy to burn and it’s 28° and raining.”
Jolly Mon Indoor Water Park at Margaritaville
494 Tan Tar A Dr, Osage Beach, MO 65065
Jolly Mon is indoors, and the resort itself promotes it as a year-round water park, with specific winter hours posted for December–May.
You’ll find:
-
Slides and kids’ play structure
-
Lazy river and activity pool
-
Warm air, even when the wind is howling outside
Do note:
-
Hours change seasonally (in winter, it’s often weekends and certain weekdays).
-
Day passes are generally available, but double-check the latest details on Margaritaville’s site.
For our Lakecation guests, we often suggest pairing a morning at Jolly Mon with a quiet evening in your rental—kids crash hard after waterslide day.
Bowling, Movies & Indoor Odds and Ends
The Osage Beach / Lake Ozark area has plenty of classic indoor standbys:
-
Eagle Lanes in Osage Beach – local bowling alley at 914 Highway 42; listings and directories continue to show it as operating, but specific hours can shift, so we always recommend calling ahead in winter.
-
Marcus Eagles’ Landing Cinema in Lake Ozark – full movie theater with current showings and daily hours.
If you’re staying in Osage Beach, both are an easy drive and pair perfectly with an early dinner and a return to your lake house or condo.
Osage Beach Off-Season: A Simple Sample Day
Here’s how we’d plan a winter Saturday based in Osage Beach:
-
Morning – Brunch at On The Rise, then a quick grocery run for snacks and game-night supplies.
-
Midday – Let the kids (or your inner kid) run wild at Miner Mike’s, or hit Jolly Mon Indoor Water Park for waterslides and lazy river time.
-
Late Afternoon – Back to your Lakecation rental: start a pot of chili, play cards, curl up by the fireplace if your home has one.
-
Evening – BBQ and sports at Wobbly Boots or a movie at Eagles’ Landing Cinema and leftovers back at the house.
Low-stress, high-comfort, no one bored.
Lake Ozark & the Bagnell Dam Strip: Quieter But Definitely Not Closed
In summer, the Strip can feel like a carnival. In winter, it feels more like a small town with great views and surprisingly good food.
Where We Love to Eat in Lake Ozark in Winter
Stewart’s Restaurant – Classic Lake Breakfast, All Year
Stewart’s On the Strip – 1260 (often listed as 1151) Bagnell Dam Blvd, Lake Ozark, MO
Stewart’s is a Lake institution—and the good news is, it’s not just a summer thing. The main locations are listed as open 7 days a week for breakfast and lunch, starting early each morning.
Think:
-
Giant cinnamon rolls and pancakes
-
Hearty breakfasts and diner-style lunches
-
A steady mix of locals, workers, and visitors
This is our go-to suggestion for:
-
A chilly-morning fuel-up before a hike at Ha Ha Tonka
-
Or a “we just got into town and we’re starving” meal any time of year
Baxter’s Lakeside Grille – Dinner with a View
2124 Bagnell Dam Blvd, Lake Ozark, MO 65049
Baxter’s is one of those “special but not stuffy” spots we recommend constantly, especially for off-season date nights or grown-up dinners with a view.
-
Known for steaks, seafood, and classic American dishes
-
Panoramic lake views from the dining room
-
Current listings show regular lunch and dinner hours throughout the week, including the colder months.
This is your “watch the winter sunset over the water and remember why we love it here” place.
Shawnee Bluff Winery – Wine, Pizza, and a Big Lake View
Tasting Barn / Winery operations near Bagnell Dam Blvd, Lake Ozark, MO
Shawnee Bluff Winery is very much a year-round operation. Multiple sources note that the winery runs all year, with hours like Thursday–Monday for their tasting barn and seasonal adjustments.
Expect:
-
Wine by the glass, bottle, or tasting flight
-
Brick-oven pizza and Italian-leaning menu items
-
Coverage options for nasty weather—indoor spaces plus decks when it’s mild
It’s one of our favorite “grown-up afternoons” in winter: a tasting, some pizza, and time just staring out at the water.
Lake Ozark Indoor Fun When the Strip Is Quiet
Lake Escape – Escape Rooms on the Strip
1384 Bagnell Dam Blvd, Lake Ozark, MO 65049
Lake Escape runs themed escape rooms right on the Strip and is marketed as a go-to rainy-day or off-season activity.
Why we like it in winter:
-
Completely weather-proof
-
Great for families with teens, friend groups, or couples who like puzzles
-
Easy to pair with breakfast at Stewart’s or dinner at Baxter’s or Shawnee Bluff
Do book ahead—especially on holiday weekends and Saturdays, when locals are also looking for something fun indoors.
Marcus Eagles’ Landing Cinema
1300 Barred Owl Ln, Lake Ozark, MO 65049
We mentioned it earlier with Osage Beach because it serves the whole central Lake area—but technically, Eagles’ Landing is in Lake Ozark.
-
First-run movies
-
Online ticketing through Marcus Theatres and sites like Fandango and Showtimes
-
Listings show daily operations, making it a consistent winter option.
Pair it with Mexican, pizza, or diner food nearby and you’ve got a classic winter evening.
Sample Winter Day Around Lake Ozark & the Strip
If your Lakecation rental is in Lake Ozark or the Village of Four Seasons, here’s an easy, local-approved day:
-
Morning – Big breakfast at Stewart’s on the Strip.
-
Late Morning – Wander the quiet Strip, pop into a few shops, maybe drive across Bagnell Dam to admire the view.
-
Afternoon – Escape room session at Lake Escape or a matinee at Eagles’ Landing Cinema.
-
Evening – Wine and pizza at Shawnee Bluff or dinner at Baxter’s, then back to your rental to watch a movie or play games.
Quiet, cozy, and still very much “Lake.”
Camdenton: Caves, Castles, and Quiet-Side Comfort Food
Camdenton is our go-to recommendation for guests (and locals) who say, “We want nature and quieter roads more than nightlife.”
Year-Round Outdoor Stars: Ha Ha Tonka & Bridal Cave
Ha Ha Tonka State Park
1491 State Road D, Camdenton, MO 65020
Open year-round, Ha Ha Tonka combines castle ruins, sinkholes, bluffs, natural bridges, and spring-fed water in one unforgettable park.
Winter perks:
-
Leaf-off views give you bigger, more dramatic sightlines
-
Trails are quieter; you may feel like you have parts of the park to yourself
-
Cooler temps make stair-heavy trails more inviting than they are in July
Dress for it: layers, hats, gloves, and shoes with good traction—you can run into mud or icy patches.
Bridal Cave & Thunder Mountain Park
526 Bridal Cave Rd, Camdenton, MO 65020
Bridal Cave proudly advertises itself as open YEAR ROUND, and regional blogs and TripAdvisor reiterate that it’s a four-season attraction with guided tours in all weather.
Highlights:
-
Constant, comfortable cave temperature (warmer than outside in winter)
-
Guided tours that typically take about an hour
-
Beautiful formations and a rich local history
This is one we recommend often for winter guests, because it’s:
-
Easy to combine with breakfast or lunch in Camdenton
-
Great for kids and adults
-
Totally unaffected by wind, rain, or snow outside
Where We Actually Eat in Camdenton in Winter
RJ’s Family Restaurant – Breakfast & Lunch Staple
275 W Hwy 54 (US-54), Camdenton, MO 65020
RJ’s is a beloved breakfast and lunch diner that clearly operates outside of just summer—current info notes they’re open Tuesday through Sunday, 6 a.m.–2 p.m.
Expect:
-
Big portions of classic breakfasts
-
Daily specials
-
That “everyone knows everyone” local diner energy
We love sending Ha Ha Tonka visitors here—hit RJ’s for breakfast, then drive a few minutes to the park.
Pepperoni Bill’s Pizzeria – Pizza Night, Sorted
35 Camden Ct SW, Camdenton, MO 65020
Pepperoni Bill’s is another Camdenton spot running beyond summer, with multiple listings showing it open regularly (typically afternoons and evenings, closed Mondays and Sundays).
Highlights:
-
Hand-tossed and thin-crust pizzas
-
Salads, wings, toasted ravioli, and more
-
Big local following and very solid reviews
Great for:
-
Takeout back to your Lakecation rental
-
Casual, warm, “we just hiked and we’re starving” dinners
Wine on the Quiet Side: Riverbird / Shawnee Bluff Vineyard
Shawnee Bluff also has a Riverbird tasting location near Camdenton, with regional wine guides listing Thursday–Sunday hours and emphasizing year-round operations.
If you’re already in Camdenton for Ha Ha Tonka or Bridal Cave, it’s worth checking whether their Camdenton/Eldon locations have open hours that weekend. They make a nice, relaxed add-on to an outdoor day.
A Camdenton Winter Day, Local-Style
If your Lakecation home is in or near Camdenton, here’s one of our “perfect Saturdays”:
-
Early – Breakfast at RJ’s Family Restaurant.
-
Mid-Morning – Explore Ha Ha Tonka: castle ruins, spring, overlooks, and a couple of your favorite trails.
-
Afternoon – Warm up underground at Bridal Cave; grab coffee or cocoa afterward.
-
Evening – Pizza at Pepperoni Bill’s or a dressed-up dinner at The Trophy Room, then back to your rental to play cards, soak in the hot tub, or crash early.
It’s the “quiet side” of the Lake in the very best way.
Tying It All Together: Using Lakecation as Your Off-Season Home Base
The beauty of winter at Lake of the Ozarks is that you don’t have to pick just one town. With the roads clear and traffic light, it’s easy to:
-
Stay in Osage Beach and spend a day each in Lake Ozark and Camdenton.
-
Base yourself near Lake Ozark and make Osage your indoor-fun day, Camdenton your nature-day.
-
Tuck into a quiet spot outside Camdenton and still pop into Osage Beach for brunch and shopping.
That’s where we come in.
At Lakecation Vacations, we manage a handpicked collection of Lake of the Ozarks vacation rentals across:
-
Osage Beach
-
Lake Ozark
- Sunrise Beach
-
Camdenton & surrounding areas
You’ll find:
-
Lakefront homes with big views, fireplaces, and often hot tubs—perfect for winter evenings.
-
Lakefront condos that make ideal couple’s or small-family retreats.
-
Hidden gems tucked into quiet coves and wooded hillsides for maximum peace.
Because we live here, we don’t just toss you a generic list. When you tell us:
-
“We want kid-friendly and mostly indoor fun” → we think Osage Beach, Jolly Mon, Miner Mike’s.
-
“We’re foodies who love wine and views” → we point you toward Lake Ozark, Baxter’s, Shawnee Bluff, and The Trophy Room.
-
“We’re hikers and cave-tour people” → we focus on Camdenton, Ha Ha Tonka, and Bridal Cave.
We help you line up a rental that matches that personality and sits in the right location to make your off-season plans easy.
Little Tips Only Locals Think to Tell You
Before you plan your winter visit (or local staycation), a few bonus pointers:
-
Check hours the week you’re traveling.
Even year-round businesses tweak hours in the off-season, especially midweek. Always peek at the website or social media before you drive over. -
Layer up for outdoor fun.
Ha Ha Tonka and Lake of the Ozarks State Park are gorgeous in winter, but wind off the bluffs can be sharp. Hats, gloves, and a wind-breaking layer make the difference between “this is magical” and “we’re done in 10 minutes.” -
Expect fewer crowds—and shorter waits.
Jolly Mon, Miner Mike’s, escape rooms, wineries, and restaurants are much more relaxed than peak summer. It’s a great time to try places you might avoid when it’s packed. -
Bring your “nesting” items.
Favorite blankets, slippers, board games, a new puzzle—winter trips live and die by how nice it feels to come “home” after your outing. Our homes and condos have the basics; your personal touches make them feel like yours.
Ready to Experience the Lake Like a Local This Winter?
Summer gets all the Instagram love, but off-season Lake of the Ozarks is where a lot of the real living happens:
-
Brunch in Osage Beach without a wait.
-
A nearly empty trail at Ha Ha Tonka with wide-open views.
-
A quiet afternoon at Shawnee Bluff or a cozy dinner at Baxter’s watching winter light fade over the water.
-
Kids worn out from an afternoon at Miner Mike’s or Jolly Mon, asleep before the movie ends back at the house.
If that sounds like your kind of “off season,” we’d love to help you plan it.
You can:
-
Browse Lake of the Ozarks vacation rentals in Osage Beach, Lake Ozark, Sunrise Beach, and Camdenton at
lakecationvacations.com -
